Water is Life
In Kenya one in six people has no access to safe drinking water. A child dies every eight seconds from diseases associated with lack of safe drinking water and poor sanitation. Eighty percent of illnesses in developing countries are related to contaminated water and poor sanitation One litre of water weighs one kilogram. In developing countries, water carriers--usually women and girls--walk several kilometres each day to find water. A person in sub-Saharan Africa uses 10-20 litres of water (contmainated or otherwise) each day. A Canadian uses 326 litres Women spend many hours a day fetching water, usually from muddy pools. Water borne diseases are rampant.
We can put in a simple well for $2,500 to serve a community or for upwards of $500 we can protect a spring which will serve about 400 people a day.
During the last six months, Tembo-Kenya put in two new wells and protected three springs. We have a list of thirteen or more sites requesting water.
